Johnna Murray, the original stage manager of Into the Woods was the guest for episode 28 of Ben Rimalower's podcast Giants in the Sky. In it she states that her father, lyricist John Murray (sometimes credited as Jack Murray), was hired to write the lyrics for the title song of the 1958 movie BONJOUR TRISTESSE but was bought out and Stephen Sondheim ended up writing them. Officially the lyrics ...

You have to understand that this song was written FOR Glynnis Johns - a wonderful actress, but not a trained singer. All those wonderful singers out there tend to overperform this song and focus on the notes. Like Johns, Dame Judi Dench is a PHENOMENAL actress, but not a trained singer. Which is one of the reasons why this version of Send in the Clowns is one of the best ever recorded.

This was a brilliant production I saw the pro’s preview and then seven times more. I was later privileged to direct a charity performance fully staged with a cast of 45! Yes biggest train set ever. The most difficult challenge … Stephen also knew how to keep you listening by challenging the director to spot Dies irae musical quote in the score by listening - he knows full well you won’t hear it until the sitzprobe as it is in the piccolo part in Sweeney’s rant! The show is like a Swiss watch and extreme precision is required dialogue must lead smoothly to the singing entry - ‘there is no till ready vamp’ I was told! The most satisfying experience and as we only had a week at the Bloomsbury Theatre we could be lavish with the gore so I think we turned many people vegetarian!

Funny how Sondheim was being almost eulogized in the late '70s, when actually in a way he was just getting started. Julia McKenzie was the best Sally in "Follies" ever. (Juliet Prowse was the best Phyllis.)

To be 71 and still have complete control of all vocal registers is incredible. I don’t think her voice has actually dropped in height that much since the late 70s when she was first a leading lady on Broadway. She has a very well preserved instrument.

I don’t much care for this rendition either. It lacks the wry wit others have brought to the song. I like Burnett’s version, but Polly Bergen’s performance in the first Broadway revival was phenomenal. I’m also very fond of Eartha Kitt’s version.
